The only vision I had of favelas

The only vision I had of favelas was from TV documentaries. I imagine your throat could get slit just walking around these godforsaken neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro. Is this an exaggeration or the truth? Why are the favelas so infamous and so ironically situated in the heart of Cidade Maravilhosa? What's the likelihood of surviving if you "miss a step"? Maybe I should just stay at the beach and people-watch, sipping an ice cold Caipirinha. Good idea, eh?
