I'm planning to rent a car in Hawaii but I don't know if I should get a convertible. Are the roads well-paved? Would I be able to go on a smooth road trip along the shorelines of Maui or the Big Island?
Renting a car is by far one of the best ways to get around Hawaii, if you want to do an independent tour of the islands. But know which island to visit! For example, in Lanai, you don't really want to drive, because 70% of the roads are unpaved, as opposed to the better highways of Honolulu or Hawaii islands. This is because some islands are more rural than others. However, rest assured the car rental rates in Hawaii are competitive, in fact, cheaper on some days of the week. Don't take taxis unless you really have to, they can get expensive. Some people fly in and use a shuttle that's provided (sometimes free) from a travel package that they have booked on any Hawaiian airport.

There are plenty of ways to get around Hawaii: by bus, helicopters, even passenger submarines. But if you're coming for the road trip tour of the islands, here's some awesome news: You might have too much fun! And yes, the driving laws are the same as in the US mainland.
