Many people make the not-so-obvious mistake of driving off without first inspecting the car they rented. I mean, obviously it's unethical for a car rental company to rent you a car that's already got damaged parts. However, it pays to look at the dings and dents, to check if the CD player works, to see if the gas cap is on or to inquire if the headlights, blinkers, horn, or windshield wipers work. At least if you discovered something is awry, you will not be held liable for it.
Otherwise it's hard to dispute this situation. As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.
