The penny pincher's road travel secrets

It's a no-brainer. The less you spend when you're on a road travel, the more money you have left in your pocket for other things such as shopping, gas, or maybe an extra hot fudge sundae. So how do you keep your wallet intact when you travel?

Hotels

Know where to find travel deals on hotels, attractions, and restaurants (if you don't mind a few minutes of extra effort). Usually all it takes is for you to check out online deals and sign up so that you keep getting coupons and use those coupons when you're on the road.

Car Rentals

Know the days when to rent a car (if you have to). If you must rent a car, the weekends are the best time to rent. There's less demand during the weekend and therefore the rates are lower.

Timing

Travel during off peak season (if you don't mind the quietude). Granted, you may not be able to access all the facilities on your road trip, but traveling during off peak season gives you the best rates on everything from hotels to vacation packages. The best time to travel is during the shoulder season--the months between peak and off peak, when the weather is still excellent and there are plenty of things to do.

Travel Essentials  

Get the best travel equipment (that doesn't break down in the middle of nowhere!). If you're on a road travel, your best bet is to invest on reliable GPS devices, tough luggage, or waterproof equipment. The reasons are obvious: come rain or shine, or when your car breaks down, you won't get stuck in the middle of nowhere waiting to be towed.
