Plan how far you will hike

You'd have to be insane to not know where you're going. When you're out there exploring the road, YOU DON'T WANT TO GET LOST. One of the prerequisites of being true road travelers is knowing where you're going, Or how far you're gonna be driving and hiking. 

But then again, getting lost is almost impossible these days. With a smartphone or GPS, you're equipped with road maps that will tell you exactly where you are and where you're headed. The iPhone, for example, constantly updates its software so that now it tells you exactly where to turn when you input an address, far more accurately than the good old GPS.

So there's no excuse to getting lost or overdoing your hike. Other than...your phone battery is dead in the middle of the jungle at dusk.
